Liposuction
Liposuction procedures vary depending on what your ultimate cosmetic goal is, and whether you are combining liposuction with other plastic surgery procedures. Liposuction was first performed in 1974 and was a tremendous improvement over previous surgical body contouring techniques. Liposuction is not appropriate for people with a weakened immune system, diabetes, heart or artery problems, or a history of blood clots or restricted blood flow. Liposuction works best for fat deposits which cannot be removed by diet or exercise and usually occur in areas such as the chin, chest, stomach, sides, back and thighs and the infamous “love handles.
As with all plastic surgery, the success of liposuction will depend on a number of individual factors, such as age, skin elasticity, weight, and overall health. Men and women may also choose liposuction to reduce breast size, a procedure that results in less scarring than other types of plastic surgery.
During the procedure your surgeon will removed fat from under the skin with the use of a vacuum-suction canula (a hollow pen-like instrument) or using an ultrasonic probe that emulfsies (breaks up into small pieces) the fat and then removes it with suction. Fat can be transferred from one part of the body and used to make the face more youthful or enhance the fullness of the buttocks. Fat is generally subcutaneous -- located underneath the skin.
Laser-Assisted Liposuction and Ultrasonic Liposuction are newer, quite popular alternatives to more traditional forms of liposuction. Laser lipo is an outpatient procedure, with most surgeries taking place in your physician's own clinic. Laser liposuction became popular when SmartLipo™ was released. SmartLipo™ presented a safer alternative to traditional liposuction with less downtime and is different from other types of liposuction since a laser dissolves the fat cells and only requires local anaesthesia.
It is important to discuss the amount of post operative downtime with your surgeon so that you can prepare for this in advance, especially when considering having the treatment abroad. It is important to understand the limitations of liposuction as a body conturing procedure and is not an alternative to a tummy tuck.
